FIUTS (The Foundation for International Understanding Through Students) has always been a great resource for students, connecting university students to local and global communities through programs that build international awareness, cross-cultural communication, and informed leadership.
As an international student, I have been involved in several FIUTS events since my freshman year. But CulturalFest is one of the biggest events I have participated in so far. CulturalFest is held annually to celebrate the diversity and talent that international students bring to campus from all over the world. There are two largest parts: International Expo that features activities, arts and crafts, games, and hands-on learning opportunities and the Performance Showcase which takes place at Meany Hall, featuring high-quality cultural performances by students at the UW.
The picture above shows our Performance Committee. As a member, I am responsible for spreading the word out to all the talented students on campus, recruiting and assisting the performers, selling tickets, and so on. My favorite part was being a judge at the audition. We had nearly 50 applications and can only accept around 12 performances to be performed at the actual event in February. Through the audition, I have gained knowledge about many unique cultures all over the world. Each performer has their own inspiring and educational story about the cultural significances and how they got into what they are doing. It was tough to deny any performance, but as a committee we had an intensive discussion and we finally worked through it. Looking back, we have gone half way and there's still much more to go but I could proudly say CulturalFest has been a valuable experience for me.
